Firm History

Kohlberg & Company was formed in 1987 by Jerome Kohlberg Jr., the senior founding partner of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., and James A. Kohlberg to concentrate on private equity investments in the middle market, which we define as comprising acquisitions valued at $100 million to $1 billion. Kohlberg has organized eight private equity funds with aggregate commitments of $7.5 billion. We are currently investing out of our eighth fund, activated in 2017, with $2.2 billion of commitments.

The operations of the Firm are conducted by 28 professionals, led by Managing Partner Sam Frieder and Chief Investment Officer Gordon Woodward, including seven Investment Partners who average over 17 years of tenure at Kohlberg. In addition, we utilize 11 full-time Operating Partners to help execute our thesis-driven, sector-oriented investment strategy. Kohlberg’s Operating Partners are all former CEOs – a majority former CEOs of our portfolio companies – from diverse operating backgrounds, and are a vital component of our due diligence activities and value-creation efforts through their roles at our portfolio companies providing oversight, mentoring and expertise to strategic plan implementation.
